It is with great sadness I tell you that we sadly lost Lace in March 2011. She suffered severe liver failure and despite all ours and the vets efforts we were unable to save her. I feel blessed to have spent time with this sweet beautiful mare and thank her for all the wonderful foals she has left in her legacy.

At Oakleigh our mares are the heart of our breeding program and have a huge influence in our future.

We assume the responsibility of producing horses that are a joy to be around and are a source of pride for their owner.

All our mares are accomplished show horses in their own right with several being rewarded on the AMHA Honour Roll

We believe this to be very true. When choosing mares to enter our breeding program. we search worldwide for the very best conformation, bloodlines and temperaments in our girls.

In fact, because of the great influence the mares have over the development and the early life of the foal, we believe that the dam in many ways is far more important than the sire.

Mares only produce one foal per year, so selecting the very best is especially important. High quality, even tempered matriarchs are vital for any selective breeder.

If you breed from the best, you will produce the best.

Have you ever heard the saying: "You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear"?

Well the same goes for breeding correct foals. If it's not there in the Dam & Sire, it's not there at all.

We love the spring and foaling time. The girls parade their babies with such pride and are so attentive nurturing the new life they have bought into the world. They never cease to amaze me with beautiful, refined babies they produce for us year after year, we have a lot to thank them for.

Very often I will cast an eye across the nursery paddock to see the mares taking it in turns to stand with all the foals why they play, checking that each and every one of them is safe. The other mums will take their turn for a well earned and much deserved break, grazing further down the field. It has even been known for one of them to feed another mares foal. These girls certainly seem to have it all worked out between them. I know this all sounds as if it has come straight out of the pages of a fairytale book, but I promise you, this really does happen at Oakleigh.

We hope you appreciate the quality of our mares as much as we do. Each and everyone of them are outstanding in their own right.
