'The reason I am doing what I love'

Having worked for many years within event and showing yards, I have learnt a lot about the conditioning and presentation of top quality show horses. I worked in the background of the showing world preparing horses and ponies for shows. I had always loved the look of these beautiful creatures and thoroughly enjoyed transforming the muddy juvenile into a classy show horse. At the age of 15 I knew that this was the direction I wanted my life to go in. My life with horses was set. I worked my way up from the bottom being the runner in the yard doing all the menial tasks to head girl in a highly respected show yard. I was fortunate to be able to learn the art of presentation at the highest level, from some of the best show producers around. As life went on I got married and had my children. My daughter was just the excuse I needed to get back into horses and 'showing'. We went from Welsh Section A Ponies to Frolic, a beautiful Thoroughbred Riding Pony and then on to Bosun, my Hanoverian sired by the very famous Grand Prix Dressage Horse and Grade A Show Jumping stallion 'Dallas', who belonged to the Queen. All my friends giggle at me now, they can't believe that I have gone from a giant to these amazingly captivating miniatures. For the record, I would never go back.

I now have my own American Miniature Horse Stud. We have three stallions all with outstanding pedigrees standing at stud, Little Kings Russian Reigns, Fallen Ash Scouts Spellbound and ERL Voltaires Hi Voltage, with a gorgeous Silver Dappled Appaloosa colt waiting in the wings Bar B Supreme Legend. To date he has has had some very respectable results in the show ring. Along with our brood mares they have been sourced from only the most respected studs in the world. All have outstanding pedigrees with many of the great legends extreamley close up in their pedigrees. We now show our own horses at the highest level and have to date been graced with great success.

It is of no difference whether they are top dressage horses, sports horses, show ponies or their miniature show counterpart, they should all be conditioned and cared for in the same way.

Very often we forget about the importance of specific feed regimes and exercise for our miniatures horses. We tend to 'baby' them (which is fine), but if you want to excel in the show ring you have to step up to the mark. There is a huge difference between a pretty horse or pony that we take to shows and the professional show horses and ponies that we see winning the Championships.

First and foremost you must start with a horse that has good confirmation, we have all heard the saying 'you can't make a silk purse out of a pigs ear'. If your confirmation is reasonably correct you are half way there. As your horse muscles up through correct feeding and exercise you will notice that all those minor imperfections can be diminished. He must be taught show ring manners and how to stand for the judge to enhance his best features. Many people feel the need to ration their horses feed to get the more streamline silhouette, but in fact you should do the complete opposite. If you put your horse on a restricted diet he will lose muscle and top line. You need to exercise your horse in the same way as a larger horse and feed him in accordance with his workload. Then comes the endless bathing, clipping and show presentation. It all becomes worth it though when you take your pride and joy to the show ring. This is why I love what I do.
